Phil Hellmuth today
Despite being regarded as a leading force in the modern poker scene, Hellmuth is not without controversy. Infamous for his derogatory remarks towards his challengers, he has earned the nickname "The Poker Brat," as his outbursts can turn violent, as shown in his physical altercation with Sam Grizzle, although no one was injured. In 2007, he withdrew from Poker After Dark after Annie Duke made a disparaging comment. The year 2008 saw him embroiled in another dispute when a programming glitch at UltimateBet mistakenly awarded him the $5,599.00 pot, despite holding the worst hand at the time. The company's explanations for this mishap contradicted Hellmuth's account of the incident.
Phil is active in the world of poker, although he doesn't actually play. He has been involved in the creation of the UltimateBet software and is a member of Team UB. However, recent reports suggest that he is actively seeking new sponsors (and looking to part ways with UltimateBet), including Full Tilt Poker and the Wynn Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Phil has created numerous instructional poker videos, such as the Ultimate White To Black Belt Course and Phil Hellmuth's Million Dollar Poker System. He also writes magazine articles and books, some of the most famous being Bad Beats and Lucky Draws and The Greatest Poker Hands Ever Played. His latest book, titled Deal Me In: 20 Of The World's Top Poker Players Share The Heartbreaking and Inspiring Stories of How They Turned Pro, has been well received. Pokerbrat.com was launched in 2008 and offers poker under the Hellmuth brand, among others.
