Childhood and the path to becoming a professional poker player

George Danzer was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and spent his early childhood in Portugal. It was there that his talent first emerged, as he claimed victory in the nationwide chess championship for children under 10 years old. Following that, he relocated to Salzburg, Scotland, where he had his first encounter with the world of poker.

Like many other players of the new generation, Danzer also discovered the game through online poker. After several years as a successful online hobby player, he decided to take the leap to become a professional in 2006. At his first tournament, the Paris Open of Poker, he achieved impressive second and third place finishes in the €1,000 NLHE Shootout and €500 NLHE events. That same year, he made his debut at the WSOP and managed to secure a prize of over $38,000 in the Main Event.

Change of Image and the Legendary WSOP 2014

During the years 2007 to 2013, Danzer had a successful run in the poker world, although he didn't manage to achieve monumental success. He participated in numerous EPT, PCA, and WSOP tournaments, accumulating a significant number of money finishes. Unlike many other players, he didn't limit himself to just Hold'em and a couple of other game variations; instead, he excelled in every imaginable poker variant. His versatility was demonstrated impressively as he made it to the final tables in Texas Hold'em, Omaha, 7 Card Stud, 2-7 Draw Lowball, 8 Game, and Razz at prestigious tournaments.

Finally, in 2014, George Danzer achieved the long-awaited breakthrough. Shedding his nice son-in-law image, he suddenly emerged at poker tables worldwide with a mohawk haircut and leather jacket, quickly gaining the reputation of a poker punk. Simultaneously, his success rate improved, and after numerous commendable performances, he finally managed to ascend to the premier league of international poker stars.

He began his triumphant journey by triumphing in a NLHE competition at the EPT in Monte Carlo. Shortly thereafter, he achieved his breakthrough at the WSOP in 2014. His exceptional performance came in the fifth place finish in the Triple Draw Event, followed by his remarkable feat of securing his first world championship title in the "10,000 $ 7 Card Razz" tournament just a few days later. Surprisingly, he continued his winning streak by claiming his second world championship title in the "10,000 $ 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo" event a mere 11 days after his initial victory. Remarkably, he cashed out an impressive seven times during the WSOP 2014, taking home a total prize money of over 800,000 US dollars along with two coveted bracelets.

Further successes and George Danzer today.

Resting on his laurels was not an option for George Danzer, even after his remarkably successful WSOP 2014. Just a few months later, he returned to the WSOP APAC in Melbourne and clinched the championship in the 8 Game Mixed Event. After a relatively quiet year in 2015, the rising star of the scene made a triumphant comeback in 2023, securing four Money Finishes at the WSOP 2023. While he only managed to claim the third spot in his specialty, the 7 Card Stud Main Event, he emerged as the victor in the "10,000 $ Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo Split-8 or Better" tournament, earning him his fourth and most recent bracelet.

That was simultaneously the final major accomplishment of Danzer, who became a father in 2023 and subsequently relocated from Salzburg to Augsburg in Bavaria. After a decade as a poker professional, during which he competed in over 100 live tournaments worldwide each year, he has now turned his back on the scene. However, his fans can still observe him on his Twitch streaming channel, participating in high-stakes online poker tournaments or playing the card game Hearthstone, and engage in conversation with him.
